Fes is Morocco's oldest imperial city and home to the world's largest car-free medina — a UNESCO World Heritage Site that has been continuously inhabited for over 1,200 years. It sits approximately 560 km north of Marrakech, a journey of around 5 hours 30 minutes by private car via the scenic Middle Atlas route.
Our recommended route heads north on the A7 motorway to Ben Guerir, then turns east on the N8 through the fertile Beni Mellal plains at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. The road then climbs into the Middle Atlas, passing through Azrou — famous for its ancient cedar forests where Barbary macaques roam freely — and through Ifrane, Morocco's Alpine-style university town, before descending to Fes via Meknès.
This is a private, one-way door-to-door transfer. Your driver will collect you at your hotel or riad in Marrakech and drop you directly at your accommodation in Fes. No shared buses, no train changes, no waiting.
Not included: Return trip (book separately), guided tours, entrance fees, meals.
Departure time: Depart by 7:00–8:00 AM to arrive in Fes by early afternoon. This gives you time to settle in and explore the Fes el-Bali medina before sunset.
Ifrane stop: Consider a short stop in Ifrane, a charming mountain town with red-roofed European-style buildings and the famous stone lion sculpture. Just 15–20 minutes off the main route, it makes an excellent coffee break stop.
Cedar forest at Azrou: The cedar forest just south of Azrou is where you'll often spot wild Barbary macaques along the roadside. A brief stop here is worth it if you're passing in the morning.
What to see in Fes: The Fes el-Bali medina — 9,000 narrow alleys, the Chouara tanneries, Bou Inania Madrasa, Al-Qarawiyyin University (the world's oldest) — is one of the most extraordinary urban environments on earth. Allow at least 1 full day.
