Merzouga is Morocco's most famous Sahara destination, a small town on the edge of Erg Chebbi — the vast sea of orange dunes that rise up to 150 metres and stretch to the Algerian border. It lies approximately 560 km southeast of Marrakech, a full day's drive of around 7 hours by private car.
The route takes you over the Tizi n'Tichka mountain pass (2,260m) through the High Atlas, then descends into the world-famous "Gateway to the Sahara" city of Ouarzazate, before heading east on the N10 through the ancient Draa Valley — a lush corridor of date palms, kasbahs and Amazigh villages contrasting with the vast surrounding desert. The road passes through Agdz and Zagora (gateway to Draa Valley tours) before curving north through the Jbel Sahro foothills to Merzouga.
This is a private, one-way transfer: we drive, you enjoy one of the most scenic road journeys in North Africa, and we deliver you door-to-door at your camp or hotel in Merzouga.
Not included: Return trip (book separately), guided tours, camel rides, overnight camps, meals.
Departure time: Depart Marrakech by 6:00–7:00 AM. This gets you to Merzouga by early-to-mid afternoon, leaving time to rest before the sunset camel ride on the dunes — one of Morocco's most memorable experiences.
What to bring: Pack a warm layer for the mountain pass (cold even in summer mornings), plenty of water for the journey, and sun protection for the Sahara. Sand can be whipped up by wind even in mild weather.
Dune activities in Merzouga: Most desert camps organise sunset camel rides, optional overnight stays in traditional Berber tents, sandboarding, and 4WD excursions among the dunes. Book your camp in advance, especially in March–April and October–November peak seasons.
Fixed price, confirmed via WhatsApp. Depart when you choose. Pay on the day.
