Ouarzazate — known as the "Gateway to the Sahara" and Morocco's Hollywood — lies approximately 205 km southeast of Marrakech, on the far side of the High Atlas mountains. The drive takes around 3 hours 30 minutes via the N9 road, which climbs dramatically over the Tizi n'Tichka pass at 2,260 metres — the highest road pass in North Africa.
This is one of Morocco's most spectacular road journeys. The N9 winds through Berber villages clinging to steep mountainsides, past silver-grey kasbahs, and over the high pass where the views across the Atlas are breathtaking. In spring, the slopes are dotted with wildflowers and the peaks still carry snow. The descent on the southern side reveals the dramatic shift from green Atlas valleys to the sun-baked pre-Saharan landscape of the Draa Valley.
Just before Ouarzazate, the road passes within minutes of Ait Ben Haddou, the UNESCO-listed clay kasbah that has appeared in dozens of international films including Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. A photo stop or short visit is easily arranged on the way.
Not included: Return trip (book separately), guided tours, Ait Ben Haddou entrance fee, meals.
Departure time: Depart Marrakech by 7:00–8:00 AM to cross the Tizi n'Tichka pass in the clear morning light and arrive in Ouarzazate by late morning. If you want to stop at Ait Ben Haddou, departing by 8 AM lets you visit in the morning before the afternoon heat.
Winter note: The Tizi n'Tichka pass can occasionally close due to snow in December and January. We monitor road conditions and advise you in advance if conditions may affect your travel.
Ait Ben Haddou: Plan at least 1.5–2 hours if you want to properly visit the ksar. There is a small entrance fee. The morning light on the ochre towers is particularly beautiful.
Continuing south: Ouarzazate is the starting point for routes south to the Sahara. From here, Merzouga is a further 4–4.5 hours east via the N10 through the Draa Valley. If you plan to continue to the Sahara, we can arrange a multi-leg transfer.
